"A success day is one in which you have stayed in touch with Me, even if many things remain undone at the end of the day. Do not let your to-do list (written or mental) become and idol directing your life. Instead, ask My Spirit to guide you moment by moment. He will keep you close."
My days have always revolved around a To Do List. It's my personality that likes to have a plan and then cross things off as they are completed. Crossing things off is what is rewarding to me. But, the To Do Lists can become an idol. I get obsessive about focusing on what is on my list. This leave no room for different things that can happen during the day which may deviate from the list.
I've tried before to not use To Do Lists - that is just too crazy for me! I feel totally out of sorts and feel like I have no direction in my day. I also feel like I'm losing my mind when I don't have a list because things I think of will roll around in my head over and over. It's simply better for me to write things down, then they are out of my head. When I get things out of my head and on the To Do List that's great.
However, my major downfall is thinking I need to get all the items I’ve listed done in that same day. Ugh!! It is a constant mental battle to just be okay with accomplishing what I do get done and leave the rest for the next day. Not letting the list direct my life.
If I catch myself being obsessed with the To Do List, I stop and pray. Father God, help me to remember I need to do your will today and not focus on my list of things to do. Help redirect my attention to you and what you would have me do, Amen. For me this is going with the flow of the Holy Spirit and letting God lead the way.
If you are like me and the compulsion of your well created To Do List gets in the way of what God wants you to do today. STOP! Take a breath, say a prayer, refocus and be okay letting the list go to the way side and God take the lead.
