This ‘mom thing’ wasn’t going to be as bad as she had thought. Being older and having a few years established in her career she felt she could handle it. Month by month she followed along in the book, What to Expect When Your Expecting, it was amazing what God was creating within her, a new life they would raise in this world.
One of the hobbies that they never gave up while she was pregnant was riding motorcycle. In fact, she took her driving portion of the motorcycle driving test while 5 months pregnant. The doctor visits for checkups were going well and all was normal. During the 6-month checkup, the doctor, when asked if it was okay if she continued to ride motorcycle for a few more months really didn’t like the idea and suggested that she stop driving, but could ride as a passenger if she wanted.
So off they went with a group of motorcycle friends to the 90th Anniversary of Harley Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the pilot vehicle driving a pickup with all the luggage. So disappointed but wanting to follow the doctors’ orders to be careful since she was 28 years old and wanting this baby after so many years of waiting.
The next motorcycle trip just a month later was closer to home, in Medora, ND for the HOG (Harley Owners Group) Rally. Doing the same, as the trip to Milwaukee she was the pilot vehicle. However, she got to do some riding around the Medora area. It was so beautiful and such great weather at the end of August.
Being very active in the Minot HOG they and their friends were volunteering for registration at the rally. It was always fun because you were able to see everyone that was coming to the event. Being in the 7 month of pregnancy and visibly pregnant many people commented on when is the baby due and is the baby going to be named Harley.
The end of the first day of the rally, done with the registration and ready to go eat supper in downtown Medora they left the pickup she was driving at the hotel and rode the motorcycle downtown. They waited in the center square area to meet up with the rest of the group. It was Saturday, August 28th, a very hot day. Beautiful riding weather but terribly hot when being 7 months pregnant. While sitting waiting for the others to arrive she was thinking about the baby and its arrival in just about 7-8 weeks. The next week they were scheduled to do Lamaze classes. So excited to be coming to the end of being pregnant and the beginning of a new son or daughter in their life.
Waiting and thinking – the baby room was ready with the Winnie the Pooh theme, the baby clothes and diapers were bought and the names were picked out – Cassandra Lee for a girl and Phillip James for a boy. They were so excited to have either one join them but boys would seem easier to her since she grew up with brothers and was a Tom Boy herself.
Sitting down on a bench while her husband walked over to a store to look around and burn time while the others showed up for supper, she noticed how hard her stomach became and some back pain began. Deciding to stand up to relieve the pressure and pain she instantly was surprised – when she stood up it was like a garden hose was turned on – she had never wet her pants before and this was beyond embarrassing! Looking franticly for her husband – where had he gone? She was froze solid, not wanting to move. Any slight move to turn and look for him, brought another gush and reality of what was happening!
Her water had broke and she was at the end of her 32nd week of pregnancy the baby was due October 10th and it was only August 28th. They had not taken the Lamaze classes and she had not read the last two chapters in the book What to Expect When Your Expecting. She was reading them as she went through the stage, it was more exciting that way and plus all the other mothers she knew had told her enough to know that the ending was very painful. She also knew that in the Lamaze classes they would show you all the gory movies on labor – ugh – that was the thing she was dreading the most.
She knew this was bad – water breaking – seven weeks early – in downtown Medora on their motorcycle – husband off looking in a store – and there she stood utterly embarrassed because her pants were soaked and liquid was running down her leg. What was she going to do?
