Medicine for the soul, liquid courage, a night cap – alcohol is its name.
It’s all too familiar with many and leads some to the depths of hell and eventually death. Alcoholism is at times shamed, shunned and not spoken about in the open. Why? It’s hard to describe and more difficult to understand. By some it is a weakness and others describe it as a disease. Very hard to grasp and find a true understanding. That is why a definition best described of the disease of alcoholism is; cunning, baffling and powerful.
Cunning because it seduces and deceives.
Baffling because there is no fix or cure.
Powerful because it can lead some to the grips of hell and the gates of death.
Laying to rest is a soul taken to early in life from a powerful disease that would not loosen its grip. Strangling the life out of a person with so much love to give.
Sad, is too simple of a description of the loss but for me it is all I feel. Sadness about the disease of alcohol that will kill, steal and destroy.
For those who cannot be set free there are many who have found freedom from the disease? I am one of them by God’s grace and mercy who have not found it necessary to turn to a drink or drug to solve any of my problems today. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
As a friend reminded me; for every person that dies from the disease of alcoholism there is another person that wants to stay sober. Go help them!
The solution for me today is to fight for my sobriety, turn to God on a daily basis and help others. This is how I can give back and not let the disease continue to steal and destroy. My focus must stay positive and in a state of gratitude and to remember that I want life more then death today.
Be at peace my dear friend, be at peace!
